April 2009

Rainy Day in Lakewood

Its about 1:30 and the tarp is on the field here at FirstEnergy Ballpark in Lakewood.  Don’t worry, apparently the rain is going to subside at some point in the afternoon and baseball will be played.  The field drains very well according to the folks up in the press box.

Batting practice will not take place on the field obviously but in the underground cages.  Therefore, a fairly light day for the players.

Just got the lineups- one new player (Jeremy Hamilton) a 5th rounder back in 2008.  Several wrinkles for the Shorebirds in game three.  Brendan Monaghan will get the start behind the dish and bat ninth, Jacob Julius will start in right and bat second, Jed Stephen will start at short and bat sixth and Tyler Kolodny will bat third today.

Looking forward to the meal up in the press box today.  Last night was a veal and cheese dish with mixed steamed vegetables and pasta.  It was delicious.

Anyway, time to go interview Ryan Minor for the pregame show.

Until next time, Go Shorebirds!

Game Two and Burger King

Just arrived at the ballpark in preparation for game two.  More players boarded the first bus to the park today (good sign).   Basically, the team arranges for two separate bus departures to the park every day.  Pitchers are required to go on the first bus for stretching and throwing, while position players usually take the second.  They are an hour apart by the way.

We are actually staying about 20 minutes away from the stadium in Toms River, New Jersey.  Very nice hotel but not a lot within walking distance.  Food options are somewhat limited.  There is a Burger King right in the parking lot (my lunch destination two days in a row- I know not very healthy), Friendly’s is a little bit of a walk down the street and apparently there is a sushi place somewhere close (maybe I’ll investigate).

Speaking of Burger King, if you bring a BK receipt to a Sunday game at Perdue Stadium this year you get a general admission ticket for $1!!!!

Ok- I just got the lineups, Shorebirds lineup is identical to last night.  BlueClaws have a couple wrinkles tonight.

Rain is a possibility by the way.  Hopefully it stays away.  I was talking to some folks here and apparently the field drains extremely well so who knows.

Until next time, Go Shorebirds!

Game Time!

I am sitting in the press box only 35 minutes before the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Lakewood BlueClaws ring in the new season.  FirstEnergy Ballpark is a beautiful field and a sell-out crowd is expected.  The weather, by the way, is unseasonably beautiful.  Sunny skies in New Jersey?  Thats a rarity.

I was down on the field for quite awhile today talking to coaches and players and they all seem to be really excited to kick off the season tonight.

One more thing- the World Series Trophy won by the Phillies last year is here tonight.  I’ll try to get someone to take a picture of it.

Listen in on Sportstalk 960 WTGM back in Salisbury.

Until next time, Go Shorebirds!

The Baltimore Orioles have assigned players to Delmarva and they are on the Eastern Shore (roster will be released today).  A quick note: the #13 and #14 rated players in the Baltimore Orioles organization (according to Baseball America) will be playing here at Arthur Perdue Stadium this summer.  Also, eight players who played at least one game for the Shorebirds last season are back.

A quick workout yesterday for the team and today a lot of media responsibilities for the guys (just normal procedure during the preseason).  Headshots, media day are on the docket.  Pretty easy and routine stuff for most of the players.

On Wednesday, the Shorebirds are hosting a Meet-and-Greet at Arthur Perdue Stadium at 5:00 p.m.  First chance to meet the players before they depart for Lakewood, New Jersey on Thursday morning.

Everyone here at the stadium is busy gearing up for April 16th, when the Shorebirds welcome the Lake County Captains to Arthur Perdue Stadium.

Until next time, Go Shorebirds!

Welcome to the Delmarva Shorebirds Blog!  In 2009, I (Bret Lasky) will give you a behind the scenes look at the Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.  Follow along all season long as we discuss the team, life on the road, bus movie selections, upcoming events, team banter and more.

Well, its 10:00 in the morning on a Saturday and Family Fun Fest is in full swing here at Arthur Perdue Stadium.  The Carousel is whipping around down the left-field line, balloons are waving around the park and everyone is having a great time!

In just a couple minutes or so the Easter Egg Hunt will begin.  Prizes are on the line for all winners. National Anthem tryouts are also getting set to begin.  It’s always interesting the range of singing talent that will perform here.

Hey, players arrive on Sunday!  Then, on Thursday, April 9th, the team will load up the bus and depart for Lakewood, New Jersey to ring in the season against the Lakewood BlueClaws.  Don’t forget that the team will return to Arthur Perdue Stadium on April 16th for the home opener!

Hope that you enjoy the blog this season and don’t forget to check back regularly!

Until next time–Go Shorebirds!
