Townsend Promoted

Luis Bernardo was also promoted to Bowie (AA).  Caleb Joseph was involved in a collision at the plate last night. 

Salisbury, Md. – The Baltimore Orioles announced on Saturday afternoon that Shorebirds first baseman Tyler Townsend has been promoted to the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A).  Townsend will join the Keys on Saturday night for their 6:00 p.m. game against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.


In 30 games for the Shorebirds, Townsend tore apart South Atlantic League pitching.  He hit .342 (40-117) with three home runs and 26 RBIs. 


The 22-year old played in just three games in the first half of the season after suffering a hamstring injury.  Townsend was sent back to Sarasota to rehab and therfore missed the final 55 games of the first half.  Townsend returned to the Shorebirds to open the second half on June 24. 


Townsend put his stamp on the league in the month of July.  In 21 games, he batted .354 with three home runs and 21 RBIs.  He also totaled 10 doubles.  As of July 24, he leads the Orioles minor league system during July in batting average (.354).  He is also tied with Brandon Waring of Bowie for the organization lead with 10 doubles in July.  Additionally, he is second in the system during the month in RBIs (21).  Michael Aubrey (Norfolk) leads the system in RBIs during July (25).   


The former FIU star capped his brief stint in a ‘Birds uniform with a fantastic series against Hickory.  Over four games, he went 8-for-18 with five runs, two doubles, a triple, two home runs and 10 RBIs. 


Townsend was the 2006 Gatorade Delaware State Player of the Year. 


Third place Delmarva squares off with first place Lakewood on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
