Who is Scott Copeland?

Since he is making his debut on the hill tonight, I thought I would introduce you to ‘Birds righty Scott Copeland.

First of all, he made 12 starts for the Ironbirds and posted a 2-5 mark with a 2.91 ERA.  Copeland led the Ironbirds in starts (12) and innings pitched (65.0).  He is an extreme extreme (I meant to write that twice) ground ball pitcher.  His GO/AO (groundout to airout) ratio is 3.47.  The Penn League hit just .197 against him this year.

He was selected in the 21st round of the 2010 draft out of Southern Mississippi.  During his senior campaign, he posted an 11-1 record with a 3.75 ERA.  Copeland led conference USA in wins.  In the C-USA Championship, he went 2-0 in 11.2 innings.  He was named the C-USA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

In 2009, Copeland was on the Southern Miss. team that advanced to the College World Series.  He went 2-5 with a 6.41 ERA that season.  They were eliminated after two games.  Texas beat them in game one 7-6 and UNC took out the Golden Eagles in game two, 11-4.  Copeland tossed 0.2 of an inning in relief of game one of the CWS.  It was the first time in school history that Southern Miss. made the CWS.

He played one season at Panola Community College before transferring to Southern Miss.
