When Dave Super, the trusty keeper of the diamond at Perdue Stadium says he is going to start cutting the grass in the Monday morning meeting, you know it’s time to start blogging in preparation for the 2011 season.
First of all, welcome back to another year of Shorebirds baseball. I hope that this blog serves as an additional source for keeping up-to-date with everything related to the team in 2011. You’ll find information about games, stats that take you beyond the box score and information from the road.
The enthusiasm surrounding the 2011 Shorebirds has really been refreshing during the offseason. Everywhere you turn, some “expert” is predicting that the Shorebirds are going to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Only time will tell.
Each year, Baseball America puts up their “Prospect Handbook”. For each organization, they put together a “Top 30 Prospects” list. Five of the “Top 30” could open in Delmarva according to Baseball America.
1. Manny Machado
7. Mychal Givens
10. Jonathan Schoop
12. Parker Bridwell
19 of the ‘”Top 30″ have played for the Shorebirds at some point during their careers. A couple guys made big jumps from a year ago. Joe Mahoney wasn’t even in the “Top 30” last year and this year he is number 11. Ron Welty went from off the list to #19. Ryan Berry went from #24 to #9 in the span of a year. L.J. Hoes went from #21 to #4.
With all the speculation about Manny Machado, here is a nugget to digest. IF Manny Machado arrives in Delmarva, he would be the highest draft pick (third overall) to ever play for the Shorebirds. The current holder of the distinction is Adam Loewen, who was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2002 draft. Loewen played for the Shorebirds in 2004.
A couple quick reminders.
- Ryan Minor will be a guest on “Off the Bench” with Whiskey and Randy on Wednesday (March 2nd) on 960 The Sports Animal. He is scheduled to appear around 6 p.m.
- Individual tickets for the 2011 “Strike Out Hunger” all-star game and the 70 regular season home games go on sale on March 12.
- Fan Fest will be March 26 at Perdue Stadium
- Shorebirds will play Salisbury University in an exhibition game on April 5.
I’ll try and take more pictures this year. Look, we have brand new carpet in the office. Also, we now have a little “Flock Shop” in the main office. The last picture is of the all-star game tickets lined up and ready to be sold. JUNE 21ST EVERYONE!
